Exhibition of the participants of the "ART RESIDENCIES"

On Wednesday, 28 November at 6.00 pm – for one night only – at L’OFFICINA con-Temporanea, the exhibition space of the Luoghi Comuni San Salvario complex, were presentation of the works produced during the International Art Residency conceived and organised by the Turin-based Istituto Garuzzo per le Arti Visive.

With the Art Residencies programme, which is geared towards emerging international artists aged under 35, the Istituto Garuzzo is orchestrating cultural exchanges with a dual purpose: to offer Italian artists the chance to engage in professional development overseas; and to host foreign artists in Piedmont. These are both opportunities to promote Italian art and to maintain and reinforce institutional relationships with the partner countries, building cultural bridges in the process.

The 2018 edition, curated by Rebecca De Marchi with Roberta Aureli, enabled the four artists Shota
(Tbilisi, Georgia), Matías Ercole (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Sadaf Hesamiyan (Tehran, Iran) and Mananiko Kobakhidze (Tbilisi, Georgia), along with a curator, Renata Zas (Buenos Aires, Argentina), selected through an open call, to spend their residency period in Turin in November, the month traditionally dedicated to contemporary art. The young artists stayed at the Luoghi Comuni San Salvario residential complex.

The residency afforded myriad opportunities to spend time together, allowing the young winners to
compare and contrast their creative and technical research with that of their counterparts from other
countries and cultures. The residency made it possible for them to come into contact with artists,
independent curators, museum directors and other culture-sector operators.

On the evening of Wednesday, 28 November, the results of the work done by the four artists were presented, marking the end of the initiative.

“We have always invested in young people,” states Istituto Garuzzo Chairwomen Rosalba Garuzzo, “and so we decided to set up the Art Residencies – we believe very strongly in talent and in the future. The Istituto Garuzzo believes in engaging with others, travelling and cross-fertilisation”.

The institutional partners of the Istituto Garuzzo are: the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
International Co-operation
, the Italian Embassy in Tbilisi, the Italian Embassy in Teheran, the Italian Cultural Institute in Buenos Aires, the Argentine Ministry of Culture, LEPL Creative Georgia, the EUNIC (EU National Institutes for Culture) cluster in Iran and the Kooshk Residency in Teheran.

The Istituto Garuzzo per le Arti Visive, a not-for-profit cultural body based in Turin, was established in
2005 to raise the profile of Italian artists around the world, contributing to the popularisation of contemporary art as a medium for cultural diplomacy, facilitating amicable exchanges between countries and promoting projects such as exhibitions, residencies and prizes.
